Artist Statement:
This series was created in 1991, when dykes where fighting to be heard and seen within LGBT community and society. At this time, there was little political, intellectual, and sexual recognition of dykes, even in the nominally inclusive LGBT communities. I created this series to express and represent female power, queer politics, and the reclaiming of ideological space.
The choice to have women naked was to reveal the raw strength of female power through the matriarchal lens. The stripping away of clothing serves as a metaphor for peeling off social, political, and ideological forms of oppression.
This was made as a photographic ode to the Amazons, Take Back The Night, ACT UP “zaps”, punk rock anarchy, and feminism(s).
