Act Up (1990-1992)

Artist Statement:

This series of photos was created during the early years of ACT UP in New York City and San Francisco. I joined ACT UP NYC in 1990, when the fight against AIDS was in full motion. PWA’s and queer allies were at battle with our government for the right to live, fighting against public intolerance and ignorance.

These photographs are from ACT UP “zaps.”  Zaps were fierce and furious demonstrations, during which we took control of public spaces to deliver a message to stop the political idleness, prejudice, and ignorance that was (is) contributing to the deaths of so many.

R.I.P. Ray, Anthony, Marvin, Tim, Robert, and all who have died in the fight against AIDS.
